It refers to the presence of an infection in or around the artificial joint (prosthesis) that has been implanted during the surgical procedure.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) criteria for diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Major Criteria*<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communicating sinus tract to joint or prosthesis<\/li>\n<li>Isolated organism in two different tissue\/fluid cultures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Minor Criteria**<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elevated ESR\/CRP<\/li>\n<li>Elevated synovial leukocyte count<\/li>\n<li>Elevated synovial PMN%<\/li>\n<li>Purulent material<\/li>\n<li>Isolated organism in one tissue\/fluid culture<\/li>\n<li>&gt;5 neutrophils per hpf in 5 hpf histologic tissue analysis \u2715400 magnification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*1 criterion is needed to establish diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection<br \/>\n**4 out of 6 minor criteria are needed to establish diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection.<br \/>\nCRP, C-reactive protein;
