It almost exclusively affects women, leading to considerable disability, daily functioning impairment, and psychosocial distress.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnostic criteria of lipedema<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Medical history (A)<\/strong><br \/>\n1 Disproportionate body fat distribution<br \/>\n2 No or limited influence of weight loss on fat distribution<br \/>\n3 Limb pain and bruising<br \/>\n4 Increased sensitivity to touch or limb fatigue<br \/>\n5 Nonpitting edema<br \/>\n6 No reduction of pain or discomfort with limb lift<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical examination (B, C, D, E)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B Proximal part of the lower limb<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Disproportionate fat distribution<\/li>\n<li>Circumferentially thickened cutaneous fat<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>C Distal part of the lower limb<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Proximal thickening of subcutaneous fat<\/li>\n<li>Distal thickening of subcutaneous fat, accompanied by slender instep (cuff sign)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>D Proximal part of the arm<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Significantly thickened subcutaneous fat in comparison with vicinity<\/li>\n<li>Sudden stop at elbow<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>E Distal part of the arm<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Thickened subcutaneous fat, accompanied by slender back of hand (cuff sign)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Extra criteria F<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pain when applying bimanual palpation<\/li>\n<li>Distal fat tissue tendrils of the knee (popliteus)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Diagnosis is highly probable when present: A (1 to 6)+(B [1+2] or C [1+2] or D [1+2] or E).<br \/>\nIn the absence of at most two of these criteria (A to E), the presence of the extra criteria F(1) or F(2) also support the diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Buso G, Depairon M, Tomson D, Raffoul W, Vettor R, Mazzolai L.
