Symptom onset is most often between 45 and 65 years.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In September 2011, the International Behavioural Variant Frontotemporal Dementia Criteria Consortium established a new set of clinical diagnostic criteria for the behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). The new diagnostic criteria have a sensitivity of 76 % for probable bvFTD and a sensitivity of 86 % for possible bvFTD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Diagnostic Criteria for the Behavioural Variant of Frontotemporal Dementia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diagnostic Criteria for Behavioural Variant Frontotemporal Dementia<\/p>\n<p>I. Neurodegenerative Disease<br \/>\nThe following symptom must be present to meet criteria for bvFTD:<br \/>\nA. Shows progressive deterioration of behaviour and\/or cognition by observation or history (as provided by a knowledgeable informant)<\/p>\n<p>II. Possible bvFTD<br \/>\nThree of the following behavioural\/cognitive symptoms (A\u2013F) must be present to meet criteria. Ascertainment requires that symptoms be persistent or recurrent, rather than single or rare events<\/p>\n<p>A. Early behavioural disinhibition [one of the following symptoms (A.1\u2013A.3) must be present]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A.1. Socially inappropriate behaviour<br \/>\nA.2. Loss of manners or decorum<br \/>\nA.3. Impulsive, rash or careless actions<\/p>\n<p>B. Early apathy or inertia [one of the following symptoms (B.1\u2013B.2) must be present]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">B.1. Apathy<br \/>\nB.2. Inertia<\/p>\n<p>C. Early loss of sympathy or empathy [one of the following symptoms (C.1\u2013C.2) must be present]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">C.1. Diminished response to other people\u2019s needs and feelings<br \/>\nC.2. Diminished social interest, interrelatedness or personal warmth<\/p>\n<p>D. Early perseverative, stereotyped or compulsive\/ritualistic behaviour [one of the following symptoms (D.1\u2013D.3) must be present]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">D.1. Simple repetitive movements<br \/>\nD.2. Complex, compulsive or ritualistic behaviours<br \/>\nD.3. Stereotypy of speech<\/p>\n<p>E. Hyperorality and dietary changes [one of the following symptoms (E.1\u2013E.3) must be present]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">E.1. Altered food preferences<br \/>\nE.2. Binge eating, increased consumption of alcohol or cigarettes<br \/>\nE.3. Oral exploration or consumption of inedible objects<\/p>\n<p>F. Neuropsychological profile: executive\/generation deficits with relative sparing of memory and visuospatial functions [all of the following symptoms (F.1\u2013F.3) must be present]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">F.1. Deficits in executive tasks<br \/>\nF.2. Relative sparing of episodic memory<br \/>\nF.3. Relative sparing of visuospatial skills<\/p>\n<p>III. Probable bvFTD<br \/>\nAll of the following symptoms (A\u2013C) must be present to meet criteria:<br \/>\nA. Meets criteria for possible bvFTD<br \/>\nB. Exhibits significant functional decline (by caregiver report or as evidenced by Clinical Dementia Rating Scale or Functional Activities Questionnaire scores)<br \/>\nC. Imaging results consistent with bvFTD [one of the following (C.1\u2013C.2) must be present]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">C.1. Frontal and\/or anterior temporal atrophy on MRI or CT<br \/>\nC.2. Frontal and\/or anterior temporal hypoperfusion or hypometabolism on PET or SPECT<\/p>\n<p>IV. bvFTD with Definite FTLD Pathology<br \/>\nCriterion A and either criterion B or C must be present to meet criteria.<br \/>\nA. Meets criteria for possible or probable bvFTD<br \/>\nB. Histopathological evidence of FTLD on biopsy or at post mortem<br \/>\nC. Presence of a known pathogenic mutation<\/p>\n<p>V. Exclusionary Criteria for bvFTD<br \/>\nCriteria A and B must be answered negatively for any bvFTD diagnosis. Criterion C can be positive for possible bvFTD but must be negative for probable bvFTD.<br \/>\nA. Pattern of deficits is better accounted for by other non-degenerative nervous system or medical disorders<br \/>\nB. Behavioural disturbance is better accounted for by a psychiatric diagnosis<br \/>\nC.
