It is defined as pancytopenia with a hypocellular bone marrow in the absence of an abnormal infiltrate or marrow fibrosis. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Clinical features and diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Proposed diagnostic criteria (both I and II must be fulfilled in the absence of neoplasia):<br \/>\nI- At least 2 of the following complete blood count (CBC)\u00a0findings: granulocytes &lt; 500\/L, platelets &lt; 20,000\/\u03bcL, corrected reticulocyte count &lt; 20.000\/\u03bcL<br \/>\nII- Bone marrow must be either markedly hypoplastic (&lt; 25% of NAAC*) or moderately hypoplastic (25-50% of NAAC*) with &lt;30% of cells being hematopoietic (*NAAC = normal age appropriate cellularity)<\/p>\n<p>The modified Camitta criteria are used to assess severity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe AA (SAA):\u00a0Marrow cellularity &lt;25% (or 25\u201350% with &lt;30% residual haematopoietic cells), plus at least 2 of: (i) neutrophils &lt;500\/\u03bcL, (ii) platelets &lt;20.000\/\u03bcL, (iii) reticulocyte count &lt;20.000\/\u03bcL.<\/li>\n<li>Very Severe AA (VSAA):\u00a0As for SAA but neutrophils &lt;200\/\u03bcL.<\/li>\n<li>Non\u2010severe AA (NSAA):\u00a0AA not fulfilling the criteria for SAA or VSAA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Killick SB, Bown N, Cavenagh J, Dokal I, Foukaneli T, Hill A, Hillmen P, Ireland R, Kulasekararaj A, Mufti G, Snowden JA, Samarasinghe S, Wood A, Marsh JC; British Society for Standards in Haematology.
