{"id":2304,"date":"2017-10-24T12:20:06","date_gmt":"2017-10-24T12:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/anaphylaxis\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T19:29:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T19:29:45","slug":"anaphylaxis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/anaphylaxis\/","title":{"rendered":"Diagnostic Criteria for Anaphylaxis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"99c380e4b4a7b96c35d7ddf7dcb434e8\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- MC 2019- Horizontal -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0127150553352455\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3806776041\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death; it involves multiple organ systems, including the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and skin.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnostic Criteria for Anaphylaxis<\/strong><br \/>\nAnaphylaxis is highly likely when any one of the following three criteria is fulfilled<br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Criterion 1<\/b><br \/>\nOnset of an illness within minutes to several hours after possible exposure to an allergen, with involvement of the skin,\u00a0mucosal tissue, or both (e.g., generalized hives, pruritus or flushing, or swollen lips, tongue, or uvula) and at\u00a0least one of the following signs or symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respiratory compromise (e.g., dyspnea, wheeze or bronchospasm, stridor, reduced peak expiratory flow, or hypoxemia)<\/li>\n<li>Reduced blood pressure or associated symptoms of end-organ dysfunction (e.g., hypotonia or collapse, syncope, or\u00a0incontinence)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Criterion 2<\/b><br \/>\nTwo or more of the following signs or symptoms that occur rapidly (within minutes to several hours) after exposure to a\u00a0likely allergen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Involvement of the skin or mucosal tissue (e.g., generalized hives, itching or flushing, or swollen lips, tongue, or uvula)<\/li>\n<li>Respiratory compromise (e.g., dyspnea, wheeze or bronchospasm, stridor, reduced peak expiratory flow, or hypoxemia)<\/li>\n<li>Reduced blood pressure or associated symptoms of hypotension (e.g., hypotonia or collapse, syncope, or incontinence)<\/li>\n<li>Persistent gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., crampy abdominal pain or vomiting)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Criterion 3<\/strong><br \/>\nReduced blood pressure within minutes to several hours after exposure to a known allergen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infants and children: low systolic blood pressure (age-specific) or &gt;30% decrease in systolic blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Adults: systolic blood pressure of &lt;90 mm Hg or &gt;30% decrease from the person\u2019s baseline blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>References:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Jones SM, Burks AW.
