Eligibility criteria were established by the 1991 National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference Panel and continue to be the most widely accepted criteria.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<b>Selection and Exclusion Criteria for Bariatric Surgery<\/b><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Selection criteria<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Able to adhere to postoperative care (e.g., follow-up visits and tests, medical management, use of dietary supplements)<\/li>\n<li>BMI &gt;\/= 40 kg per m<sup>2<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>BMI &gt;\/= 35 kg per m<sup>2<\/sup> with obesity-related comorbidity<\/li>\n<li>Previous failed nonsurgical attempts at weight reduction, including nonprofessional programs (e.g., Weight Watchers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Exclusion criteria<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cardiopulmonary disease that would make the risk prohibitive<\/li>\n<li>Current drug or alcohol abuse<\/li>\n<li>Lack of comprehension of risks, benefits, expected outcomes, alternatives, and required lifestyle changes<\/li>\n<li>Reversible endocrine or other disorders that can cause obesity<\/li>\n<li>Uncontrolled severe psychiatric illness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BMI = body mass index.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>References:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Schroeder R, Garrison JM Jr, Johnson MS.
