{"id":2364,"date":"2014-08-18T19:52:28","date_gmt":"2014-08-18T19:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/psyocd\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T19:45:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T19:45:42","slug":"psyocd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/psyocd\/","title":{"rendered":"Criteria for the Diagnosis of Obsessive\u2013Compulsive Disorder (OCD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"99c380e4b4a7b96c35d7ddf7dcb434e8\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- MC 2019- Horizontal -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0127150553352455\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3806776041\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">by obsessions or compulsions (or both) that are distressing, time-consuming, or substantially impairing. <\/span><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>Criteria for the Diagnosis of Obsessive\u2013Compulsive Disorder (OCD)<\/strong><br \/>\nObsessions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Obsessions are recurrent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced, at some time, as intrusive and unwanted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">The person attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, urges, or images, or to neutralize them with some other <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">thought or action (i.e., by performing a compulsion).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compulsions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Compulsions are repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand washing, ordering, and checking) or mental acts (e.g., praying and <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">counting) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">The goal of the compulsive behavior is to prevent or reduce anxiety or distress or prevent some feared outcome.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Symptoms causing impairment<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Obsessions or compulsions are time consuming (&gt;1 hr\/day).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">There is clear evidence that the symptoms cause the person distress or interfere with or reduce the quality of social, <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">academic, or occupational functioning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Symptoms are not better accounted for by another mental disorder (e.g., depression or anxiety disorder) and are not <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">solely attributable to the effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse or medication).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Specifiers\u2020<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Insight specifier: Persons with OCD have varying levels of insight (i.e., ability to recognize that their beliefs are <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">definitely or probably not true); poorer insight (when the person is mostly convinced that their beliefs and <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">behaviors are not problematic, despite evidence to the contrary) has been associated with poor long-term outcome.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Tic-related specifier: When a person has a tic disorder or history of a tic disorder, this specifier reflects possible <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">different patterns of coexisting conditions, course of illness, and familial transmission.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2020 Specifiers clarify features of the disorder but are not required for a diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Grant JE.
