{"id":2372,"date":"2014-02-26T15:03:21","date_gmt":"2014-02-26T15:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/pao\/"},"modified":"2025-05-13T20:27:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T20:27:27","slug":"pao","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/pao\/","title":{"rendered":"Prevention of Sensitizer-Induced Occupational Asthma"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"99c380e4b4a7b96c35d7ddf7dcb434e8\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- MC 2019- Horizontal -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0127150553352455\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3806776041\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive measures may reduce the incidence and severity of\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">sensitizer-induced asthma. <\/span><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>Prevention of Sensitizer-Induced Occupational Asthma<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Primary prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Avoid introducing predicted new sensitizing agents into the workplace <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">(efficacy as primary prevention currently theoretical).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Avoid use of known sensitizing agents if safer alternatives are available.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Modify the physical or chemical form of known sensitizers to reduce risk of <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">exposure (e.g., less volatile preparations, polymerized products, and latex <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">gloves with a low-protein and low-powder content).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Reduce exposure to work sensitizers by means of occupational hygiene <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">measures (e.g., use of robotics, containment, ventilation, and respirators).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Educate workers in the use of safe practices at work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Monitor and control levels of exposure to workplace sensitizers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Secondary prevention (early detection)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Institute medical-surveillance programs for workers at risk, consisting of <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">preplacement and periodic respiratory questionnaires, with spirometry <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">and immunologic tests as indicated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Ensure that health care providers have adequate knowledge of occupational <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">asthma and consider it early in the evaluation of all adults with asthma <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">symptoms, leading to early diagnosis and management of occupational <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">asthma.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Educate workers about the risks of occupational asthma through workplace <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">programs, information provided by health care providers, and public-education programs (e.g., from news media, lung associations, and Web-based programs).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Tertiary prevention (appropriate treatment)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Evaluate symptomatic workers early and obtain an accurate diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Remove workers from further exposure to the implicated agent after a confirmed diagnosis, when possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Control other triggers and use pharmacologic measures if necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Assist the patient with a workers\u2019 compensation claim when applicable, to <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">limit the socioeconomic effects of the diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Monitor the patient\u2019s asthma in future work locations to ensure safe <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">placement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>References:<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li>Tarlo SM, Lemiere C.
