Criteria are modified in part from the proposal of the American Thoracic Society Workshop on Refractory Asthma<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use of oral corticosteroids continuously or for more than 6 months in the last year<\/li>\n<li>Continuous use of inhaled corticosteroids at high doses (budesonide or equivalent &gt;1200 ug\/day or fluticasone &gt;880 ug\/day) alongside another antiasthmatic drug, usually a long-acting B2-adrenergic (LABA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Minor criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Daily requirement for short-acting B2-adrenergic (SABA) rescue medication<\/li>\n<li>FEV1 less than 80% of theoretical value or greater than 20% variability of PEF<\/li>\n<li>One or more visits to the emergency department in the last year<\/li>\n<li>Three or more courses of oral corticosteroids in the last year<\/li>\n<li>Prior episode of life-threatening asthma<\/li>\n<li>Rapid deterioration of lung function<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*FEV1 indicates forced expiratory volume in the first second; PEF, peak expiratory flow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>L\u00f3pez-Vi\u00f1a A, Ag\u00fcero-Balb\u00edn R, Aller-Alvarez JL, Baz\u00fas-Gonz\u00e1lez T, Cosio BG, de Diego-Dami\u00e1 A, Mart\u00ednez-Morag\u00f3n E, Pereira-Vega A, Plaza-Moral V, Rodr\u00edguez-Trigo G, Villa-Asensi JR; Area de Asma-SEPAR.
