{"id":2483,"date":"2009-03-08T23:27:40","date_gmt":"2009-03-08T23:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/gaswilson\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T19:09:51","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T19:09:51","slug":"gaswilson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/gaswilson\/","title":{"rendered":"Diagnostic Criteria for Wilson&#8217;s disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"99c380e4b4a7b96c35d7ddf7dcb434e8\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- MC 2019- Horizontal -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0127150553352455\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3806776041\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Wilson&#8217;s disease is clinically characterised by hepatic and neurological manifestations related to the accumulation of copper in the liver and the lenticular nuclei, and by Kayser-Fleischer rings.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnostic Criteria for Wilson&#8217;s disease <\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0cm;\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Low serum <span class=\"SpellE\">ceruloplasmin<\/span> levels &lt; 20 mg\/<span class=\"SpellE\">dL<\/span> (Normal range 20-50 mg\/<span class=\"SpellE\">dL<\/span>).<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"SpellE\">Kayser<\/span> &#8211; Fleischer rings in eyes.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">High liver copper levels &gt; 250 micrograms\/g dry weight (Normal range &lt;35 micrograms\/g dry weight).<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">High 24 hr urinary copper levels &gt; 100 micrograms \/d or &gt; 1.6 <span class=\"SpellE\">mmol<\/span>\/d (Normal range &lt;50 micrograms\/d or &lt; 0.8 <span class=\"SpellE\">mmol<\/span>\/d).<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Radioisotope copper studies using 64Cu, 67Cu or 65Cu, which assesses ability to incorporate copper into <span class=\"SpellE\">ceruloplasmin<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Liver biopsy is very helpful for making the diagnosis of Wilson&#8217;s disease, especially in patients with normal <span class=\"SpellE\">ceruloplasmin<\/span> levels and no evidence of <span class=\"SpellE\">Kayser<\/span>-Fleischer rings. Hepatic copper concentrations greater than 250 micrograms\/g dry weight (normal is &lt;35 micrograms) are often found in untreated patients with Wilson&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Identification of the Wilson&#8217;s disease gene has made molecular diagnosis of this disease possible, but population-based screening is not feasible or recommended at this time.
