Irritable Bowel Syndrome<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of abdominal discomfort or pain that has two out of three features:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Relieved with defecation; and\/or<\/li>\n<li>Onset associated with a change in frequency of stool; and\/or<\/li>\n<li>Onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Symptoms that Cumulatively Support the Diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abnormal stool frequency (for research purposes \u201cabnormal\u201d may be defined as greater than 3 bowel movements per day and less than 3 bowel movements per week);<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal stool form (lumpy\/hard or loose\/watery stool);<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal stool passage (straining, urgency, or feeling of incomplete evacuation);<\/li>\n<li>Passage of mucus;<\/li>\n<li>Bloating or feeling of abdominal distension.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>C2. Functional Abdominal Bloating<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Feeling of abdominal fullness, bloating, or visible distension; and<\/li>\n<li>Insufficient criteria for a diagnosis of functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, or other functional disorder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>C3. Functional Constipation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of two or more of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Straining &gt;1\/4 of defecations;<\/li>\n<li>Lumpy or hard stools &gt;1\/4 of defecations;<\/li>\n<li>Sensation of incomplete evacuation &gt;1\/4 of defecations;<\/li>\n<li>Sensation of anorectal obstruction\/blockage &gt;1\/4 of defecations;<\/li>\n<li>Manual maneuvers to facilitate &gt;1\/4 of defecations (e.g., digital evacuation, support of the pelvic floor); and\/or<\/li>\n<li>&lt; 3 defecations per week.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Loose stools are not present, and there are insufficient criteria for IBS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>C4. Functional Diarrhea<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Loose (mushy) or watery stools<\/li>\n<li>Present &gt;3\/4 of the time; and<\/li>\n<li>No abdominal pain.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>C5.
