It usually begins early in life and often occurs in people with a personal or family history of asthma and allergic rhinitis.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Hanifin and Rajka Diagnostic Criteria for Atopic Dermatitis (AD)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong> Major criteria:<\/strong> Must have three or more of:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">1. Pruritus<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">2. Typical morphology and distribution<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Flexural lichenification or linearity in adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Facial and extensor involvement in infants and child<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">r<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">en<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">3. Chronic or chronically-relapsing dermatitis<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">4. Personal or family history of atopy (asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Minor criteria: <\/strong> <span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Should have three or more of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Xerosis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Ichthyosis, palmar hyperlinearity, or keratosis pilaris<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Immediate (type 1) skin-test reactivity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Raised serum IgE<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Early age of onset<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Tendency toward cutaneous infections (especially <em>S aureus<\/em> and herpes simplex) or impaired cell-mediated immunity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Tendency toward non-specific hand or foot dermatitis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Nipple eczema<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Cheilitis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Recurrent conjunctivitis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Dennie-Morgan infraorbital fold<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Keratoconus<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Anterior subcapsular cataracts<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Orbital darkening<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Facial pallor or facial erythema<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Pityriasis alba<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Anterior neck folds<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Itch when sweating<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Intolerance to wool and lipid solvents<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Perifollicular accentuation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Food intolerance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Course influenced by environmental or emotional factors<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">White dermographism or delayed blanch<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Suggested Universal Criteria for Atopic Dermatitis (AD) by American Academy of Dermatology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A. Essential features; must be present and, if complete, are sufficient for diagnosis:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Pruritus<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Eczematous changes that are acute, subacute, or chronic:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 50px; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">a. Typical and age-specific patterns<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 100px; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">(i) Facial, neck, and extensor involvement in infants and children<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 100px; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">(ii) Current or prior flexural lesions in adults\/any age<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 100px; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">(iii) Sparing of groin and axillary regions<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 50px; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">b. Chronic or relapsing course<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">B. Associated features: Clinical associations; help in suggesting the diagnosis of AD but are too nonspecific to be used for defining or detecting AD for research and epidemiologic studies<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Keratosis pilaris\/Ichthyosis\/Palmar hyperlinearity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Atypical vascular responses<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Perifollicular accentuation\/Lichenification\/Prurigo<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Ocular\/periorbital changes<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Perioral\/periauricular lesions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">D.
