{"id":55,"date":"2009-02-26T18:23:19","date_gmt":"2009-02-26T18:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/pulards\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T21:01:02","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T21:01:02","slug":"pulards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/pulards\/","title":{"rendered":"Diagnostic Criteria for Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"99c380e4b4a7b96c35d7ddf7dcb434e8\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- MC 2019- Horizontal -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0127150553352455\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3806776041\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a syndrome of inflammation and increased permeability associated with a constellation of clinical, radiologic, and physiologic abnormalities unexplained by elevations in left atrial or pulmonary capillary pressure.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">All definitions of this syndrome include patients who meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Identifiable associated condition<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Acute onset<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Pulmonary artery wedge pressure &lt;\/=18 mm Hg or absence of clinical evidence of left atrial hypertension<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Bilateral infiltrates on chest radiography<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Acute lung injury (ALI) is present if Pao<sub>2<\/sub>\/Fio<sub>2<\/sub> ratio is &lt;\/= 300<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Acute respiratory distress syndrome is present if Pao<sub>2<\/sub>\/Fio<sub>2<\/sub> ratio &lt;\/= 200<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">ARDS = acute respiratory distress syndrome; Pao<sub>2<\/sub> = partial pressure of arterial oxygen; Fio<sub>2<\/sub> = percentage of inspired oxygen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong> Clinical Conditions Associated with Development of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Direct lung injury<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Pneumonia<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Aspiration of gastric contents<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Inhalation injury<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Near drowning<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Pulmonary contusion<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Fat embolism<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Reperfusion pulmonary edema post lung transplantation or pulmonary embolectomy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Indirect lung injury<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Sepsis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Severe trauma<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Acute pancreatitis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Cardiopulmonary bypass<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Massive transfusions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Drug overdose<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Bernard GR, Artigas A, Brigham KL, Carlet J, Falke K, Hudson L, Lamy M, Legall JR, Morris A, Spragg R.
