{"id":5783,"date":"2009-05-19T15:04:21","date_gmt":"2009-05-19T15:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/pultt\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T19:09:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T19:09:26","slug":"pultt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicalcriteria.com\/web\/pultt\/","title":{"rendered":"Indications and Contraindications for Tube Thoracostomy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"99c380e4b4a7b96c35d7ddf7dcb434e8\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- MC 2019- Horizontal -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0127150553352455\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3806776041\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>In current hospital practice chest drains are used in many different clinical settings and doctors in most specialities need to be capable of their safe insertion. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Indications for chest drain insertion<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pneumothorax\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>in any ventilated patient<\/li>\n<li>tension pneumothorax after initial needle relief<\/li>\n<li>persistent or recurrent pneumothorax after simple aspiration<\/li>\n<li>large secondary spontaneous pneumothorax in patients over 50 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Malignant pleural effusion<\/li>\n<li>Empyema and complicated parapneumonic pleural effusion<\/li>\n<li>Traumatic haemopneumothorax<\/li>\n<li>Postoperative\u2014for example, thoracotomy, oesophagectomy, cardiac surgery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Contraindications:<\/strong> There are no absolute contraindications to tube thoracostomy, particularly if the patient is in respiratory distress or has a tension pneumothorax. Anticoagulation or a bleeding diathesis is a relative contraindication in a patient undergoing elective chest tube placement for pleurodesis.
