The joints are very painful and symptoms are very responsive to anti-inflammatory medicines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Chorea: <span style=\"color: windowtext;\">Also known as Syndenham\u00b4s chorea, or &#8220;St. Vitus\u00b4 dance&#8221;. There are abrupt, purposeless movements. This may be the only manifestation of ARF and is its presence is diagnostic. May also include emotional disturbances and inappropriate behavior. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Erythema marginatum: <span style=\"color: windowtext;\">A non-pruritic rash that commonly affects the trunk and proximal extremities, but spares the face. The rash typically migrates from central areas to periphery, and has well-defined borders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Subcutaneous nodules: <span style=\"color: windowtext;\">Usually located over bones or tendons, these nodules are painless and firm.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Minor <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Criteria:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0cm;\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Fever<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Arthralgia<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Previous rheumatic fever or rheumatic heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Acute phase reactants: Leukocytosis, elevated eritrosedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP)<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">Prolonged P-R interval on electrocardiogram (ECG)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Evidence of preceding streptococcal infection: <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\">Any one of the following is considered adequate evidence of infection:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0cm;\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Increased antistreptolysin O or other streptococcal antibodies<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Positive throat culture for Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Positive rapid direct Group A strep carbohydrate antigen test<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"color: black;\">Recent scarlet fever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<div class=\"Section1\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0cm;\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Guidelines for the diagnosis of rheumatic fever.
