Functional Dyspepsia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Persistent or recurrent symptoms (pain or discomfort centered in the upper abdomen);<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">No evidence of organic disease (including at upper endoscopy) that is likely to explain the symptoms; and<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">No evidence that dyspepsia is exclusively relieved by defecation or associated with the onset of a change in stool frequency or stool form (i.e., not irritable bowel).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>B1a. Ulcer-like Dyspepsia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pain centered in the upper abdomen is the predominant (most bother-some) symptom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>B1b. Dysmotility-like Dyspepsia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">An unpleasant or troublesome nonpainful sensation (discomfort) centered in the upper abdomen is the predominant symptom; this sensation may be characterized by or associated with upper abdominal fullness, early satiety, bloating, or nausea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">B1c. Unspecified (Nonspecific) Dyspepsia<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Symptomatic patients whose symptoms do not fulfill the criteria for ulcer-like or dysmotility-like dyspepsia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>B2. Aerophagia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Air swallowing that is objectively observed; and<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Troublesome repetitive belching.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>B3. Functional Vomiting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least 12 weeks, which need not be consecutive, in the preceding 12 months of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Frequent episodes of vomiting, occurring on at least three separate days in a week over three months;<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Absence of criteria for an eating disorder, rumination, or major psychiatric disease according to DSM-IV;<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Absence of self-induced and medication-induced vomiting; and<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Absence of abnormalities in the gut or central nervous system, and metabolic diseases to explain the recurrent vomiting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p align=\"left\">Douglas A.
